Os zumbidos do Brasil (Hummings of Brazil)

It sounds cliché to describe Brasil as one of the most beautiful places on earth. But funnily enough, like a lot of things that are repeated, there’s a reason you’ve heard that before.

Much of the country’s allure lies in its landscapes, its gastronomy, its people, and its sport. All of these factors accumulate into something which I have tried to capture in this video: the hummings of Brasil, os zumbidos. To me, the spirit of Brasil lies in the way the country sounds.

It was Vinicius de Moraes – the Brazilian poet, essayist, playwright, and musician – who said that “Brazil is a country where music and dance are inseparable from everyday life”. As well as seeking to capture this musical essence, the video aims to convey the general murmurings of the country. For the soul of Brasil’s sound lies not only in its melodies, but also in the everyday movements of its people.

I hope this short film transports you to the Gigante da América do Sul, firstly through sound, and then through its visuals. The heart of Brasil must be heard, and not just seen.
